Karen thanked everyone for coming to our first HART meeting of this school year. She reminded everyone that the meetings will be on the first Wednesday of each month, except for April which will be on the first Tuesday.

H.A.R.T. MINUTES-MARCH 2011

Cindy Hricenak, Vice President, brought the meeting to order at 6:34 p.m..

Those in attendance were as follows: Officers-Vice President Cindy Hricenak, Treasurer Linda Hoy, Secretary Suzanne Kuijpers and Teacher Rep. Sue Stone. Parents: Roxanne Zuber, Georgiann Noll, Heidi Andreatti, Diane Mack, Jen Dunkelberger, Brenda Brassington, Regina Longenhagen, Kim Levan, Sue Griscavage and Juanita R. Helwig.

Patrolman Christopher R. Grow of the Ralpho Township Police Department, was our guest speaker for the evening. His topic for our meeting was " Talking To Your Children About Drugs".
He explained that Bullying and Cyber Bullying can eventually lead to drug abuse. He said that no one can really win the war on drugs but the police department hopes to put a dent in it.

He explained to the parents present that it is never too early to begin talking to your kids about drugs. Tell them that medicines are drugs and should only be taken when their parent is giving it to them. He told us to remind them that drugs are BAD even from an early age. Tell them that they should NEVER do drugs!! His advice was to talk to our kids as you would an adult-don't scream at them. Allow them to have open discussions with you on a regular basis about drugs. Use stories in the news as an opportunity for a teaching moment. Try to make them strong individuals so that they can stand up to peer pressure. Tell them to be strong and "JUST SAY NO". A structured home life is the best building block for your child's future.

He discussed robberies in our area that were also based on drug abuse. People will steal money or things they can sell to support their drug habit.
He also touched on how Bath Salts are being used and have the same effects as Cocaine or Meth. He said if you inhale a 1 inch line of bath salts, you may be awake for three days. Bath salts are legal right now, but will hopefully be illegal by the end of this month ( along with incense that is used as a drug). The incense is called Synthetic Cannibus and also is very dangerous . He told us about Huffing which is when butane from lighters is inhaled. This is commonly done by kids 11-15 years of age.

Officer Grow encouraged us to call him if we ever have any questions or need his help talking to our kids. He is willing to talk directly to the child or teen or discuss possible problems we may be having as parents. A resource he gave us for checking any suspicious pills we may come across is : www.drugs.com You can go on this website and describe the pill and it will identify it. We also received information about " TAKE BACK". You should not flush pills down the toilet or throw them in the garbage. You can take them to the police station during "TAKE BACK" and there will be no questions asked.

There was not a President's Report or Principal's Report as Karen Wojtowicz and Mr. Shirvinski were not present at the meeting.

Cindy Hricenak gave the Vice President's Report. She thanked Amy Snyder and Roxanne Zuber for all their hard work with Donuts With Dad event. The event was well attended and a great time was had by all ! Donations were taken at the event and $350.00 was raised for The Habitat For Humanity.

Linda Hoy gave the Treasurer's Report. Linda gave the ending balance of $24,536.62. The Class Fund balance is currently $6296.46. The individual class funds are as follows:
Kindergarten:$19.11
1st Grade: $1339.05
2nd Grade:$1366.74
3rd Grade: $1501.71
4th Grade: $2069.85

The Treasurer's Report was approved by a motion from Heidi Andreatti and a second from Jen Dunkelberger.

Suzanne Kuijpers gave the Secretary's Report which consisted of a review of the February Minutes. The Minutes were approved by a motion from Sue Griscavage and a second from Georgiann Noll.

Linda asked for volunteers to help out with the Gertrude Hawk Fundraiser. She said that help is needed to sort out the order forms and also to help with the pick up days. The pick up days are April 7th and 8th and you can email Linda if you are able to help out . She also asked for volunteers for Spring Picture Day and Spring Book Fair, as well as Reading Night. There were sign up forms available after the meeting .

Our next meeting will be April 5th at 6:30 p.m. in the elementary library. We hope you can join us then!!! Thanks to all who attended our March meeting and for all you do to support HART!!!

H.A.R.T. MINUTES-FEBRUARY 2011

President, Karen Wojtowicz, brought the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. on February 8, 2011.

Those in attendance were as follows: Officers- President Karen Wojtowicz, Vice President Cindy Hricenak, Secretary Suzanne Kuijpers, Advisor Mr. Shirvinski and Teacher Rep. Michele Petro. Parents: Heidi Andreatti, Diane Mack, Roxanne Zuber, Gloria Seroskie, Sherry Humphrey, Tammy Hodder, Michelle Conway, Dawn Knoebel, Sue Griscavage, Kim Levan, Richard Miller, Vanessa Stine and Marsylvia Weaver.

Leslie Bieber-Brecht, our Elementary School Guidance Counselor, was the guest speaker for the evening. She spoke to the parents about BULLYING. She explained that in grades Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd, she mainly reinforces the Golden Rule. She said that at these ages, they seem to understand that concept. This also reinforces the school rules that the children are familiar with (R.O.A.R.).
She further explained that in grades 2-3 , she focuses on standing up for yourself. She teaches the children to tell someone who is bothering them to "stop it" or " that's enough". She explained that Bullying is a person trying to get power over another person. She also explained that Bullying is a repeated, continued act against someone. She said that the term Bullying is becoming overused in our society and is often used incorrectly. If someone calls someone a name one time , that does not refer to Bullying. She said that although Bullying does occasionally happen at our school, the incidences are few and far between. Mrs. Brecht explained that she and Mr. Shirvinski work hand in hand to prevent such behavior and to work out individual problems as they occur.
In 4th Grade, Mrs. Brecht teaches the students about conflict resolution. She said that it is very important for us to empower our children so they can deal with problems throughout their lives. She added that Bullying behavior tends to peak in grades 6-8.
Mrs. Brecht took questions from the parents and encouraged those with other problems or questions to contact her.

Cindy Hricenak did not have any new information in the Vice President's Report.

Karen Wojtowicz gave the Treasurer's Report as Linda Hoy was away on vacation.
Karen explained that Yankee Candle has given us a reimbursement check in an effort to further apologize for the problems we had related to the delivery of our fundraising items. They had originally given us a 40% profit on the fundraiser, but have now given us 60% profit resulting in a reimbursement of $7,663.00.
Karen gave the ending balance of $23,833.26 in the General Fund Account. She made a motion to ammend this amount by $300.00 which was inadvertently taken out of the general fund rather than the 1st Grade account.
This motion was approved by Marsylvia Weaver and a second from Michelle Conway.
The class funds are as follows:
Kindergarten: $19.11
1st Grade: $1,639.05 ( minus $300.00 for a field trip deposit)
2nd Grade: $1,366.74
3rd Grade: $ 1,501.71
4th Grade: $ 2,069.85

The Kindergarten teachers will be present that evening to go over curriculum expectations. There will be babysitting available to those who need it so that you can enjoy the informational session. Mr. Shirvinski asked for volunteers at the meeting who could help with the babysitting that night.

There will be a Math-a-thon to benefit St. Jude's Children's Hospital beginning on March 11th and this will be for grades K-4th.
Mr. Shirvinski talked about Read Across America Day which is March 2. This will correspond with Dr. Seuss's Birthday. There will be many activities at the school to celebrate these events. The author of Chippy Chipmunk, Kathy Miller, will be at the school for assemblies. You will have the opportunity to purchase her book and get it autographed- information will be sent home with the students soon . Mrs. Pfirman's class will be having a pizza lunch with the author as they were the winners of " Predict the 1st Snow Day" contest!
Mr. Shirvinski let parents know that March 3rd will be RIF day and the children will be going home with a free book that day. Renelle Wetzel is chair person for RIF Day. He also informed everyone that Mrs. Casey was able to purchase over $7,000.00 in books for classrooms as a result of Book Fair Scholastic Dollars.

They will soon be shipping the items people were missing. People are able to return items to the store for exchange if they desire. Mr. Shirvinski stressed that the entire mix up with shipping was the fault of Yankee and not HART. He added that HART did everything correctly and also Allison did a great job handling this difficult situation. Mr. Shirvinski said that he recently spoke to the Yankee President of Fundraising Division and he wants to do something for HART to make the situation right. He will be contacting Mr. Shirvinski soon to discuss what he can do.
Karen thanked Mr. Shirvinski and Allison for all their hard work with this fundraiser and for handling a difficult situation.
Karen thanked Linda Hoy who organized the Scrip Cards Fundraiser.
New business included a discussion of the Donuts With Dad event which will be held on Feb.26, 2011. Amy Snyder will be chairing this event and is trying to secure donations of the kits from Home Depot. Lowe's was contacted as well but they do not donate kits, etc. We discussed the possibility of purchasing something additional for those coming to the event with more than one child.
Linda Hoy discussed the Spring Fundraiser. We have already committed to Gertrude Hawk, however, we learned at this meeting that we are not committed in future years even if the Middle School does it. We discussed the possibility of doing Race For Education in the future. It was mentioned by several people that the Race For Education has been very profitable for other schools. This is a consideration for next Fall. It was also discussed if we should offer another option with Gertrude Hawk for the Spring. Another fundraiser meeting will be held to iron out these details and a sign up sheet was available after the meeting.
There is $11,000 in an account from the Book Fair to purchase books for the school (classrooms and Reading Room). The next Book Fair will take place April 4-11 with the Reading Night event on April 8.
