September HART minutes and News

The meeting was called to order by President Terry Genners at 6:39 Wednesday October 4^th, 2013.

Terry started the meeting off with introductions starting with the officers and then attendance.

Next was the Vice Presidents report. Sue Griscavage mentioned that forms for Hartman Helper and Homeroom Parents would be coming home soon.  

Treasurer Linda Hoy was next.  Review of budget and approval.  A 1^st motion from Angela Charnosky and a 2^nd from Michelle Conway.

Secretary’s report was next.  Amy Snyder just asked for a review and approval of May minutes.  A 1^st motion from Dawn Knoebel and a second from Karen Wojtowicz.

Mr. Shirvinski thanked everyone for all their work to make the opening of the school year  run smoothly.  He also asked for some feedback from kindergarten orientation.  Jen Dunkleberger gave some feedback along with Michele Williams.  He then discussed the Hartman Helpers program, which is a long term volunteer program. He said there are lots of places that could use helpers such as library or art. Also the volunteer needs to have their clearances along with TB Test.  Information would be coming home shortly.   Next Mr. Shirvinski went over his Activities account and what funds it.  School pictures were $1,000, Giant rewards program $1,255.07, Box tops $2,719.  This account pays for things like Grandparents Day and PSSA Breakfast along with many others.  Next he announced that “Pennies for our Playground” is getting $5,000 from this account toward their total and all incoming box top money was going to go to that fund.  Sherry mentioned that with this contribution, pennies committee is at a total of $18,732.34.  Grandparent’s day is September 18 & 19^th.  Meet and greet is also coming up.

Library got some improvements over the summer to make it more kid-friendly.  Also 1^st floor has been repainted and the carpet in the area before LGA got removed.  Hopefully next year the downstairs will get a face lift.

Next, Mr. Shirvinski had something very hard to say which was that he is leaving the district for a new position at Cumberland Valley.  His position starts there September 30^th.  After 17years with our district, he said he has been a big decision.  He thanked everyone for their support over the last 8 years.  He mentioned that a letter would be coming home shortly.  

Mr. Shirvinski next talked about the new process with kindergarten orientation.  Mr. Shirvinski said he felt it is good but could be better.  Some of the changes included a parent orientation without the students and then one with students.  They also cut out the bus ride that is usually included.  And this year the first day of school only half the kindergarten attend then the 2^nd day the second half then on the 3^rd day everyone attended.  Mr.  Shirvinski asked for some feedback.  Jen Dunkleberger liked the orientation and classroom separation but she was concerned with those that would have to take time out of their workday to attend.  She was disappointed with there being no bus ride. And she also mentioned how she could see that the split day for starting could be an inconvenience for some parents.   Some parents mentioned that they were unaware of the changes but Mr. Shirvinski said a “save the date” was given ahead of time.  Michele Williams also gave some input.  She thought the parents only was a good idea and worked well.  But that this is her only school aged child.  She also mentioned that her child had come to the school with her preschool but there was an issue with transportation. And that the start day could be confusing.  Mr. Shirvinski mentioned that it was good feedback.  And that our District is all for the kids and what is best for the child.  He also mentioned that we have one of the best kindergarten teams. 

1) Review of Budget

Mrs. Weaver asked about the increase to fundraising due to the low classroom funds.  Linda mentioned that the AR is for 2years and that’s why it reflects a negative number.  First motion Burkland and a second from Angela Charnosky

2) a.  Mr. Shirvinski explained a little about AR and how it works for the new parents in attendance. There isn’t any information for this year yet.  But that Dauna Knoebel does a fantastic job.

b. Stephanie Maynernick sent home letter about Labels for Education.  So far with this program we have purchased reading centers that are in some classrooms.

c. Box Tops were discussed as a new contest will start this year with more information to come home soon. 

d. 13,732.34 is the current total of Pennies Committee.  Mr. Shirvinski is giving $5,000 from activates fund. The total they are working toward is $28,000.  Sherry also gave some totals from fundraising was $363 from Ralpho, and that sat there is a bake sale in Danville from 9-5 at the learning center.  She also Thanked Mr. Deeter for his help with the dunk tank at the All homes day event.  Their first meeting will be Monday at 6:30. Some ideas for this year are Brewsers night, Bus trip and bake sales. Linda asked about the cook book.  Sherry said this is at a stand still as she hasn’t gotten many recipes.  And talk of a December bus trip and then one for the cherry blossoms.

9. Harvest festival. Sue mentioned that there is need for a chair for this event and volunteers. Also the Officers have talked about having the Hartman Hustle together with the festival this year.  Sherry mentioned extending the Hustle to a Friday night game.  Sue asked the attendees what their thoughts were. There was a motion to have it in the fall.  First motion from Diane Mack and a 2^nd from Michelle Conway.

Mrs. Moncavage asked about parents donating a $1 and walking with their children.

10. Fall Book Fair Update- Mr. Shirvinski had nothing to report and the person in charge was not in attendance. More news to come.

1. Terry gave a brief on a BINGO that the officers came up with in hopes of fundraising.  $25 at door $20 in advance.  Mostly kid prizes Diane Mack offered to contact the fire hall about Bingo equipment and caller.

a. Discussion about Gertrude Hawk for Easter.  There will be a need for a spring fundraiser.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our first HART meeting of the school year!!!  It was well attended and we truly value all the input we receive at the meeting.

Thank you to all those who have volunteered your time with helping at Kindergarten lunches!!! We really appreciate it, as do the students!!!

Mr. Shirvinski announced that he will be leaving the district very soon and we wish him all the best and thank him so much for all his commitment to HART and the district.  Good luck on your new endeavor.

Next month we will be picking homeroom parents.

Our next HART meeting will be held October 2^nd  in the elementary library at 6:30pm. So please plan on joining us.  We welcome new Kindergarten parents as well as all returning parents and are so grateful for all the input and ideas shared at these meetinsg.  Hope to see you all then!!!

May HART Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 6:34pm by President Terry Genners.

In attendance were Judy Lynn Weaver, Roxanne Zuber, Tia Brown, Michelle Conway, Amy Snyder, Sue Griscavage, Terry Genners, and Linda Hoy.

Vice Presidents report.  Sue mentioned that Teacher Appreciation week is coming up.  The menu for the week is Monday-Spaghetti, Tuesday-Tacos, Wednesday-Soup and Salad, Thursday-Breakfast cart and Friday-Treat in box.

Parents are donating most everything for event.  Breakfast from HART which includes sticky buns, bagels, muffins, fruit, coffee and tea.  There will also be raffles of gift baskets and gift cards.

There is going to be a luncheon again for Hartman volunteers.  Letters will be going home to the 17 eligible. Mr. Shirvinski is taking care of event, Sue will be making salad.

On to Treasure’s report.  There was a $500 anonymous donation with a $100 going to each grade. Hartman Hustle brought in $10,211.85, this is not the profit.  Top 3 classes 1^st Mr. Horne with $905 won the snow cone party, 2^nd Mrs. Harlor with $777.00 chose the kick ball game and 3^rd Mrs. Spotts with $655.10 is having a cook out.  Top child in each class was 4^th Jonathan Helfrick $500, 3^rd Skye Stabley $130.00, 2^nd Zack Gee $130.00, 1^st Natalie Shoch $150.00, K Todd Brocius $110.00.

We raised less this year than last, the only school she worked with that had this happen.  Linda mentions possibly doing something else or sell something else.  Sue suggested having the Hustle in the fall.  Most agreed that trying it in the fall was a good idea.  Everyone agreed that doing the Hustle keeps the active and the kids really enjoy it.  Suggestion of possibly doing it during the Harvest Festival.  Amy suggested possibly going something other than a T-shirt for a reward.  Maybe something like a water bottle, Tia suggested a draw string bag and working that into the craft for the festival.

Next to Secretary’s report. Motion to approve 1st Roxanne and 2^nd Michelle. 

Principals report. Mr. Shirvinski was in attendance and there was nothing to report.

Michelle asked some questions about AR.  Party will be mini golf at 100 points.  25 points they still have a chance in this last marking period.

Judy Lynn asked what moving on up day is.  Terry explained that it gives students to meet their new teacher and other classmates before the next school year. 

Relay Recess 5/31

Michelle asked what goes on with relay recess.  Terry explained that there are all sorts of activities done with students, Lauren Day organizes.  It was also asked what time relay is and it runs from 3-12 for the community.  Linda asked why it changed and it’s due to the community demands of wanting a change hoping for a better outturn.  Terry also explained a bit about relay

Michelle asked about something she remembered from a previous meeting which was the Zoo America/Chocolate trip. Which there was discussion about switching but its not going to this year.

Linda also asked who and why the field trips are chosen.  Sue explained that the field trip needs to go with the curriculum the grade is working on. 

Our next meeting will be September 4, 2013 at 6:30 in the Library.

Sue thanked everyone for their help through out the year. Sue also offered her help to Tia for the upcoming Art show.

A huge Thank You to Linda Hoy and all who helped with making the Hartman Hustle a huge success. 

Thanks also to those who donated items and time for Teacher Appreciation Week.  The teachers and staff were really grateful for everything. Thanks to Sue Griscavage and Sherry Humphrey for organizing this week long event to show the teachers just how much we appreciate all they do!!!

It’s hard to believe the school year is almost coming to a close.  Thank you to all that attend our monthly HART meetings and those who volunteer their time to HART events.  We hope to see everyone in September!!!

April minutes and news

March HART Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 6:39pm by President Terry Genners.

Vice Presidents report.  Sue mentioned that the staff received a cookie treat as appreciation for the month of March.  She also asked if anyone was interested in volunteering for April.  Sherry and Lynn volunteered.

Next onto Treasure’s report.  Ending balance $8760.17.  The class funds are as follows:

Kindergarten:    $100

1^st Grade:         $844.16

2^nd Grade:        $1315.49

3^rd Grade:         $2543.00

4^th Grade:         $2164.68

The change in the ending balance from last month was due to a Script card reimbursement. The Treasure’s report was approved with a motion by Sherry Humphrey and Michelle Conway.

Secretary’s report.  March minutes were reviewed.  They were approved with a motion from Lynn Madden and Georgiann Noll.

Mr. Shirvinski just had a couple things.  Snacks are in for PSSA’s which are on the 9^th, 10^th and 11^th of this month.  Helpers are needed to prepare and distribute. 

Kindergarten registration.  All appointments are taken.  If you know someone who need to register please have them call the office and they will need to schedule for the summer.  Screenings are done in July. 

Knoebels trip was discussed next.  We get a good price for trip but they have gone up a little.  The park opens one hour earlier just for our school.   Kids are paid for but their was discussion in officers meeting as to what to do about staff.  Their was a suggestion to pay for half or to have them pay their own way.  A discussion will be made at a later date.  The trip is set for June 6^th.  If it rains the students will get a $5 book of tickets.

First grade needs to borrow money for their field trip. A large cost is due to the fact they take charter busses. 

Accelerated reading.  A date is needed for the party; Mr. Shirvinski said it will probably be in the next 2 weeks.

The top 3 classes for Campbell labels and box tops is

The contest goes until the end of the month.

Kindergarten registration make up day is 4/2

Title one reading in 1^st grade meeting is 4/4 at 9am for parents.

Hartman Hustle Envelops will be sent home Friday 4/5.  The top prizes will be Cook out, snow cone party and kickball.   The top participate in each grade will get lunch at Brewsers.  There will also be raffles with prizes.  Some prizes include Knoebels tickets, 31 gift and many more.  May 1^st is the event.  9:30am start.  Volunteers are needed the event starts at 9:30am and set up should start at 8:00am.  Tara takes care of all newspaper stuff.  Anyone who brings in a donation of $20 or more will receive a shirt after the event. 

Spelling Bee will be 4/19 in the High School Auditorium.  1^st/2^nd at 12:30pm and 3^rd/4^th at 8:45am.  Kindergarten is not included this year.  Also it’s the top 3 students instead of top 5 like other years, Mr. Shirvinski said

School Board meeting is set for 4/8 and 4/15 at 7:30pm

PSSA testing 4/9 to 4/11 for 3^rd and 4^th grades.  Mr. Shirvinski said they are doing PSSA Idol again this year.  It’s online if you would like to see it. Mr. Shirvinski said it goes over really well and the kids really enjoy it.  It’s full of school pride.  Mr. Deeter does a wonderful job of putting it together.  It will be shown on April 8^th at 1:30pm in the large group area.

Report cards are set to go home on 4/16

Spring picture day is set for 4/24.  Mr. Shirvinski said 3 volunteers are needed.  There is no obligation to purchase pictures.  Everyone agreed that the spring is usually the nicest.

Elementary Chorus Fest is at Bloomsburg High School on 4/26 at 7pm.  Mr. Shirvinski said that you need to try out and if picked you get to participate.  Next year we are hosting the event.  He mentioned it’s a very high event and if you have interested to come out and enjoy.

Family and Community night is 4/29 from 6-8.   Officer nominations are being taken so if you are interested please let one of the officers of Mr. Shirvinski know.  Terry nominated current officers Sue Griscavage for Vice President and Linda Hoy for Treasure.  Lynn Madden seconded.  Mr. Shirvinski suggested sending an email or sheet home for officer election.  An outreach message was suggested instead with event and officer information. 

Spring fundraiser is the Hartman Hustle set for 5/1 volunteers are needed.  You are able to got to website from form and make donations.

Pennies for our Playground.  Sherry met with maintenance and school board to go over.  Maintenance is willing to help they are also willing to let volunteers help.  She also found out that the regular mulch is fine.  Rubber mulch is only needed for children under 3.  Discussion of keeping orange equipment or replacing it.  Orange equipment would be recycled by district.  Board hasn’t donated anything as of yet to fund.  The total cost is $28,755 for equipment.  They are giving us a $500 discount.  It will have 4 slides, 15 play zones and 47 users at one time.  $2,490.93 just from students and pennies.  $438.98 was total from last dump.  $477.32 was raised from the last Brewser’s event.  Rita’s was a huge hit and they ran out in 45minutes.  $196.43 was raised.  Friday 4/5 will be another one and they have enough to serve 700.   Dauna Knoebel won Jersey and Sue Nicola won.  $150 was sent in by Susan granddaughter of Hartman. Bus trip on Saturday to DC is full.  Community night there will be a book sale.  And someone suggested doing a recipe book in the fall.  As of now the total raided is $13,647.19.  Sherry mentioned there are a couple grants that they haven’t heard back from, Geisinger being one of them.  Playworld said it would take a day to install with 10 people helping.  There is a Pennies facebook page. Terry brought up a possible fundraiser of a bus trip to a winery for the fall. 

Next we all voted on the design for the T-shirt for the Hartman Hustle.  Tia had many designs.  And we voted down to one which was Maddie Griscavage.

Vice Presidents report.  Sue discussed that 4^th grade needs help with cutting bottles for science project.  Mr. Shirvinski explained that the bottles are used for an eco system project.

Secretary’s report.  February’s minutes were reviewed.  They were approved with a motion from Karen Cecco and Lynn Madden.

This evening there was a guest speaker, Paul Caputo, the new school Superintendent. He started by giving a brief of his background. He expressed that he practices an open door policy and everyone should feel welcome to approach him if an issue arises. He also thanked everyone for attendance and support and wanted assure everyone that he puts education first. 

Principal’s report was next.  Mr. Shirvinski mentioned that kindergarten registration started taking appointments.  PSSA’s are April 9, 10 and 11^th with the tests running in the morning and afternoon instead of the 8:30-11 as previous.  This year they are going to provide a snack and will need help coordinating. The snack will be given in the morning.  Some discussion of snacks possibly go gurts, pretzels or cheese stick.  The allegery list will be checked and an alternate will be provided if needed.  The budget is not to exceed $500. 

The testing is a lot for students.  Mr. Deeter will be doing PSSA Idol again. He takes popular songs and tweaks them.  The students really enjoy this.  And anything to get them excited about the testing.  Mr. Shirvinski also gives out pencil and there will also be a dance on Friday for students to enjoy.  Lynn made a suggestion of just one snack for kids, that way there is not to much waste. 

Old Business.  Sue discussed about winter carnival since Karen wasn’t in attendance.  That it was a great turnout and that parents were a huge help.  Thank you to Mrs. Bower and John for there help.  Sue asked if everyone felt that there was enough to do, everyone agreed, yes.   Mr. Shirvinski mentioned that if anyone had suggestions to get 3^rd and 4^th graders to come their input is welcome.   Jenn mentioned that in her case scheduling was an issue with sports.  Also mentioned was the forecast was calling for bad weather.  250 was the attendance 100 more than last year.   Sue thanked everyone for their help. 

Kerry Morgan was here for read Across America Day.  She has 2 children in the school.  The kids loved it, it was one of the best ones we have ever had.  The presentation of the book was very active for the kids.  Some kids have asked for more books, so we are still taking orders.  All teachers and the library got a copy of the book.  Sue mentioned that Kerry really wanted to bring the book to life!

Accelerated reading.  For this if they meet there goal, 10,000 points, Mr. Shirvinski is going to dress up as a gorilla.  Vanessa Stine asked for a brief description of the program.  Starting at level I the students can read, take a test and earn points.  It’s an incentive program for students.  When students earn so many points they get a reward and it runs each quarter.  25 points is a cookie and milk party. 50 dippin dots, 75 food-pizza party, 100 Knoebels miniature golf/or bigger activity.  AR points are also located on child’s report card.  Thanks to Dauna for all she does!!!  Mr. Shirvinski said he will send something home about AR but please take the time to read it. 

Box tops.  A submission was recently set in.  Please keep sending them in!!!.

Pennies for our playground.  Sherry wasn’t in attendance so Sue gave a brief of recent activities.  $100 was raised from the bake sale.  $407.25 was raised from the book sale at the winter carnival. More adult books will be sold at in-service day for $1.  All payments are in for the bus trip and it’s full.  March 20^th there will be a Rita sale at the high school.  At as this point the Henry tickets have brought in over $1000.  The ticket will be pulled at Brewser’s on Sunday.  Including the bus trio in April the committee is over $10,000.  $27,000+just for the playground equipment.  Mr. Caputo talked briefly about his experience with this issue.  Over $2000 was raised just from pennies.  They have also applied for grants.  Waiting to hear from Geisinger and State farm grants.

Spring Fundraiser.  Linda mentions we need to pick a date.  $11,000 was raised last year. Each class gets 15 minutes around the track. 50% of money raised goes to class funds.  The other to HART for other events.  Tee Shirts will be given out after event this year.  Tia will have them drawn in Art and will be voted on at the May 8^th meeting.  We paid 10% last year, 10 % this year and next year will be all profit.  Prizes go to top person in each grade and top class in each grade.  There were also raffles, passes, tickets, 31 gifts etc.  All were donations.  We will be asking for volunteers at the next meeting.  Early April will be the kick off (3, 4 or 5).  There will also be a billboard for keeping track of each classes money raised. 

Terry mentioned that Linda and Sues terms are up and 2 openings on the board will need to be filled.  Election will be April 29^th.  Treasure and Vice President seats will be open if anyone is interested. 

Georgiann Noll brought up a pasta fundraiser.

February HART Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 6:37pm by President Terry Genners.

In attendance were Suzanne Kuijpers, Dawn Knoebel, Kim Levan, Judy Lynn Weaver, Karen Cecco, Roxanne Zuber, Sherry Humphrey, Loni Burkland, Karen Wojtowicz, Terry Genners, Sue Griscavage and Joe Shirvinski.

Vice Presidents report.  Sue discussed that SMART is looking for people to take officer positions.  Please contact Laurie Morris if interested or have questions.

Also AYSO is looking for volunteers to help them.  If interested please contact Janae Simean.

Next onto Treasure’s report.  Linda was not in attendance so Terry went over the Treasures report.  Ending balance $9424.67.  The class funds are as follows:

Secretary’s report.  Amy was not in attendance.  January’s minutes were reviewed.  They were approved with a motion from Sherry Humphrey and a 2^nd from Roxanne Zuber.

Next Mr. Shirvinski went over the Principal’s report.  Mr. Caputo began as Superintendent.  He will come to march HART meeting to meet everyone and introduce himself.

Mr. Shirvinski is looking for volunteers to help with PSSA testing: he wants to do snack for students.  Maybe volunteers could pick up snacks at SAM’s club, etc. and bag them to give to students on testing days.  The week of April 8^th is possible for PSSA’s.  Let Mr. Shirvinski know if you are interested.  This would take place of breakfast on test days.

Grades 3^rd and 4^th February 12^th will be testing for “writing” (pilot program).  This testing will not count.

March 8^th is School make up day

March 11^th---No School (Act 80)

As of right now school will be in session until June 7^th.

Kindergarten Registration is set for March 18-22.  Make up date April 2^nd.  Please register even if you are not sure you are sending them because it is much easier than waiting until the last minute.  Must be 5 years old by September 1, 2013.

New business.  Karen Wojtowicz gave an update on the upcoming Winter Carnival.  This is set for February 22nd from 6:00pm -8:00pm.  Mrs. Brown is planning a craft.  There will be 2 bounce houses, line dancing; Mr. Shirvinski will be doing BINGO.  Also will do Box Top sheet for the event.  Snacks will be snow cones, cereal bars (left from Harvest festival). Chips and pretzels. 

 Used Book Sale.  Please drop off gently used kid or adult books off at school by Tuesday February 12, 2013. 

Sue discussed that Laurie Morris from SMART has “SCA” merchandise (tee shirts, socks, backpacks, etc) She would like to sell it all to HART for $3034.00 but may settle for $2500.  HART discussed this; Sue will ask Laurie if we can buy a few things but not all.  Will suggest she can sell the stuff at HART events. 

Looking for volunteers for Winter Carnival- approximately 20 people.  If interested please contact Karen Wojtowicz.

School Board Meeting are on the 11^th and the 18^th at &:30pm,

Fit for funds set for May 1^st.  Students that raise $20 and will get a tee shirt; will get shirt after event.  Students will wear ROAR tee shirts for the walk.

February 23 will be the1st ever Title One Parent Meeting.  10:00-11:00am room 115 or 6:00-7:00pm in Large Group Area.

May 31^st is Relay Recess.  Lauren Day is chairperson.  Kids will participate in Relay during school hours.

Sherry Humphrey updated everyone with the progress from Pennies for our Playground.  $359 raised this month on pennies.  $1000.00 raised from Pajama Day from Box Tops, money from wearing pj’s etc. They are also still receiving some donations from businesses.  Tickets for sale for Raffle of Henry Hynoski signed jersey and football.  Tickets are $5.  Already raised $300.00.  Drawing will be held on March 10^th. 

March 10^th will also be “Brewser’s Night” again.

Mr. Shirvinski and Sherry met with Play world recently.  Our playground area is great for their equipment.  They gave her brochures to start selecting equipment.  Tim George will be talking to representatives from Play world: liability with removal of old play ground equipment.

Bake Sale on February 19^th in the High School, you can donate baked goods.  Let Sherry know if you want to bake something.  There was discussion about how to pay for postal expenses for “pennies for our Playground”

January HART Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by President Terry Genners at 6:38pm.

The meeting started with the Vice President report with Sue Griscavage having nothing to report.

Linda Hoy gave the Treasure’s report.  The general fund balance stands at $9,899.67 as of December 31 2012.  The class funds are as follows.

Kindergarten:    $100

2^nd Grade:        $1315.49

3^rd Grade:         $2843.68

4^th Grade:         $2164.68

The Treasure’s report was approved with a motion by Dawn Knoebel and a second from Lynn Madden.

Amy Snyder gave the Secretary’s report which consisted of the review of the December  minutes.   They were approved by Tia Brown and a 2^nd by Dawn Knoebel. 

Next Mr. Shirvinski gave the principal’s report.  He discussed the precautions that have been taken to ensure our children feel and are safe due to recent happenings in the news.  A lockdown drill was done, at that time there was also amble staff to talk with student if they had questions or concerns.  Mr. Shirvinski also mentioned that Sandy Hook school is similar in size to our district.   He also just wanted to reinforce that our children are safe at school and many precautions are taken.  Mr. Shirvinski asked how parents in attendance handle the issue with their own children and if they came home with questions.  Lynn discussed that she tries to shield her children from things like this but it was not to in this case since it was all off the T.V. and news.  Terry also mentioned that after the drill at school her son came home and had questions.  Mr. Shirvinski also mentioned that during a lockdown no one is to open their doors until law enforcement arrives. 

Tia discussed that she was alone during the drill but still followed the lockdown procedure and tried to imagine what would happen if she had to fit 20_plus students in her closet.   She also mentioned when and if she sees someone that she doesn’t recognize she does approach them to find out their information and where they should be.

Mr. Shirvinski also mentioned that there was a suggestion made by a parent to look into doing a snowflake submission for Sandy Hook students.   It was done and students were just told they were sending snowflakes to another school for winter greetings.  Students put just their first name on the snowflakes; teachers also decorated the envelopes that the snowflakes were sent in.  He mentioned some teachers even put glitter into the envelopes.  He also expressed how very proud he was of the student and teachers and all effort but into sending the snowflakes. 

Mr. Shirvinski mentioned he got the Box Top check from the last submission.  There is a letter coming home with information on the Act 80 days and make ups days.  Lynn asked why we are getting so many days off and is due to try and save money.  Mr. Shirvinski just mentioned the days off.

Next we moved on to Karen Wojtowicz, chairperson of the upcoming Winter Carnival.  She said the first meeting is set for January 8^th at 6:30.  Everyone is to come with lots of ideas.  If you need further information please contact Karen.

Next we moved onto the spring fundraiser, fit for funds, which will be held May 1st.  Linda asked if we are going to do shirts again.  Art class could design the shirt.  They also discussed that the children can wear their ROAR tee shirt for the event and they would get their donation shirt after the event.  Loni Burkland mentioned that she was new to the district and asked if we could fill her in so Linda discussed with her the specifics.  Last year $11,000 was raised; the cost for shirts was $1000.  Mr. Shirvinski discussed that it’s a great event to encourage fitness and wellness with students.  Linda also mentioned that we had to pay 10% last year and we will have to pay 10% this year and then every year after this will be 100% profit.  Linda also mentioned she will work on a letter for donors.

Pennies for our Playground was discussed next.  Sherry said the last drop brought in $1,092.  They are trying to reach out to other donors.  She asked each member of the committee to prepare 20 envelopes to possible donors. She also mentioned that she sent Henry Hynoski an email to see if he would sign a football to be raffled.  Discussion was made about possibly doing a jersey instead of a football.  Also discussed was where to sell tickets, possibly basketball games, winter carnival etc.  Lynn asked about Playworld being a donor and Sherry said she has a meeting with someone to discuss options for equipment and what their contribution if any. The next fundraiser is January 25^th which will be Pajama day.  $1 donation from high school students and $2 donation from teachers, if they participate.  Elementary students can wear them pajamas without a donation.  Sherry also mentioned that $537.46 was raised from the Brewser’s fundraiser and they mentioned it was one of the best yet for Breswer's.  Another is being planned for March.  Used book sale for the winter carnival is being organized.  The committee discussed 50 cents a book.  Also a bulk clothing drive is in the works as an upcoming event.  A bus trip to Cherry blossom in April is also another possible fundraiser. Sherry has been working with Mr. Shirvinski and Angela Charnosky to work on grants.  They have submitted to Geisinger, Lowes and Sheetz.  So far 25 letters went out to bigger corporations.  The total raised so far is $4329.34.  Sherry mentioned that Tia got a picture of students on the playground for a thank you to be sent out to donors.  American Legion donated $1000 to the committee.  Tia asked about the old equipment and who would be responsible for taking it down.  Mr. Shirvinski mentioned Tim George would be the person to take down but he is unsure what would happen to the old equipment.  Sue Griscavage asked if anything was ever mentioned about the black top which is cracked and uneven.  And also the issue of the orange equipment which some felt is unsafe.  Terry asked about sending out a general information letter about the committee since it had come up that a parent wasn’t aware of the current events and felt they had been missed with the information.  Mr. Shirvinski said that all information is sent home to everyone and parents need to make sure they are reading everything.  And also that the information is also send threw several hands and up to the children ultimately to get home to parent. 

Sue mentioned that a Vice President and Tresausure’s seat will be open in the next year if anyone was interested.  

Mr. Shirvinski asked for the rest of the money due for the upcoming programs.  First motion from Sherry Humphrey and second by Roxanne Zuber. 

Next Mr. Shirvinski mentioned that there is a Title 1 event coming up that he needs some volunteers to watch children while the parents attended a meeting.  The meeting is set for February 5^th from 6:30-7:30.  If anyone is able to help please contact Mr. Shirvinski.

Sherry also mentioned that Mrs. Hildebrandt brought up an idea on doing a cook book as a possible fundraiser for Pennies for our Playground. 

Teacher’s week is set for May 6^th.

December HART Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by President Terry Genners at 6:45.

The meeting started with the Vice President’s report.  Sue Griscavage did not have anything to report but she mentioned that 4^th grade could use clear soda bottles for the science project.  Sherry mentioned they could use some from the pennies drive if needed. 

Linda Hoy gave the Treasure’s report.  The general fund balance stands at $12,647.90 as of November 30, 2012.  The class funds are as follows.

Next Mr. Shirvinski gave the principal’s report.  He mentioned that PJ day is coming up and that he is not going to provide cookies and milk for classes.  Reason being that he spends about $500 on it in previous years and felt the money could go to Pennies for Our Playground, also some classes have the event at times that might not be best for cookies and milk as a snack.  An email was going to go to teacher to see if they would like to utilize homeroom parents for the event. 

Old Business was covered by Linda Hoy in the Treasure’s report.

Next we moved onto New Business.  There was no update for Accelerated reading or Campbell labels.  Box top forms were going home to be returned on Pajama day.  Keep the box tops coming!!!!  We talked about reward options for Box top form return.  Things like a piece or candy such as a lollipop or sticker.  Rewards won’t be given each time. 

Next we discussed Family Fun night.  Karen reviewed some activities from last year.  There was Wii games, Bingo, Snow cones, bounce house.  Sherry mentioned possibly having Karen Gronsky to do an activity like line dancing at the event.  Linda mention cotton candy might be a good idea.  Discussed calling it a winter carnival.  Last years date was February 3^rd from 6-8pm this year the event will be February 22^nd and Karen said she would chair the event.  Thank you so much Karen!!  Linda and Sue discussed game options.  It was mentioned that 3 gift cards were give as prizes last year for returning your Box top form, winners were picked at random. 

Pajama Day is set for December 12.

Winter Recess begins December 24-January 1^st.

Pennies for our Playground event, Cookies and milk with Santa, was a success with approximately 126 kids.  $630 dollars was made at door.  $430 was pulled in from the raffle baskets with a total of $985 total for raffles.  Thank you to all parents that donated items to go into raffles they were a huge success and they committee only paid $15 on supplies for them.  Winners were pulled at event and called to pick up basket.  If you have questions you can contact Sherry Humphrey for more information.  Face paint brought in $37.59 and $60 in donations.  With a total of $2149.88.  60 dozen cookies were purchased for the event.  At the end they were sold by the dozen for $2 and the rest were going to be given out at the next penny drop. 

2 donations were given so far with a total of $125.  Next penny drop is set for December 18^th.  It was mentioned that we need to have someone like PlayWorld come and evaluate the playground equipment for new.  Sherry mentioned the next event could possibly be a benefit night at Brewser’s.  Terry mentioned that she thought there should not have charged for face painting at event and Amy Snyder agreed.  Next Pennies meeting is December 18^th at 6:00pm 

Sue mentioned if anyone would like to sign up for this month to give teachers a treat.  Georgiann said she would do it.  Linda Hoy said she would take January. Tia Brown thanked for Novembers treat that it was much appreciated and enjoyed by all. 

Sherry gave total for postage for Pennies committee was $164.70 and $60 for milk.

HART Meeting November 2012

The meeting was called to order at 6:41pm on November   , 2012 by President Terry Genners.

In attendance were Officers: President Terry Genners, Vice President Sue Griscavage, Secretary Amy Snyder, Treasurer Linda Hoy and Advisor Mr. Shirvinski.  Parents in attendance were:  Nancy Weaver, Judy Lynn Weaver, Tia Brown Vanessa Stine, Kim Levan, Roxanne Zuber, Susanne Kuijpers, Jill Swank, Diane Mack, Jen Dunkelberger, Deb Davis, Karen Cecco, Angela Charnosky, Sherry Humphrey, and Dawn Knoebel.

Mr. Shirvinski gave the Principal’s report.  He started by thanking everyone who participated in the Harvest festival for their time and efforts.  That it again was a huge success.  Sue Griscavage mentioned the one issue that came up during the festival which was a mix-up with some shoes.  Next Mr. Shirvinski presented a slideshow of the festival.   Next Terry passed around Thank you cards that Mrs. Rhoades class had made.   Mr. Shirvinski noted that Report Card would be going home one Monday November 12, 2012.  This date had been moved due to the time off caused by the hurricane.  Make-up days would be announced at a later date. 

Terry Genners thanked everyone that came out for Harvest Festival.  She also thanked Sue Griscavage and Sherry Humphrey for their work since they were the chairpersons for this event.  Sue Griscavage noted that the committee spent only $632.19 of the $1500 budget.  Sue went over the thank you for all who donated and thank you will be send out.  Sherry added Mark Rohrbach for the bounce house.  Also Gary Stine and Dave Morgan huge thank you for all their help.

Terry mentioned that fall pictures were sent home but ID cards didn’t get out yet.  And composites would not be distributed until after retakes.  Retakes are November 16^th.

She also mentioned that the book fair went well but was condensed due to the unexpected time off.  Mr. Shirvinski mentioned that the book fair works out well in the library, also that the coupons worked out well and were a good idea.  Sue Griscavage noted that $1507.29 was deposited from the Tiger wear fundraiser. 

Next we moved on to New Business.  Mr. Shirvinski started with the 1^st AR party, Cookie contest, would be held Monday November 12.  This was for all students that reached the 25 point mark with AR.  Terry Genners asked Mr. Shirvinski to explain a little more about AR and when it starts for students. Mr. Shirvinski mentioned that this year’s theme is Going Bananas.  He then discussed that its starts for a child that reaches the level I in reading.  He mentioned that it is not required and that they can take the tests at anytime.  The break downs are: 25points Cookies, 50 points dippin dots, 75 points food at lunch, and 100 points Knoebels.  Every marking period the children can earn a party.  For example if your child didn’t reach the 25points in the first marking period and didn’t get to participate in the cookie event, if they reach 25 points in the second marking period then they can participate in that cookie event.  They have the opportunity every marking period.  

Next Amy Snyder said that box tops were sent in for submission and we should receive a check soon.  Mr. Shirvinski informed Sherry that he should be able to give something to the Pennies for Playground committee once he sees where he stands with box tops.  We discussed some extra ways to get box tops and what a success they have been and to continue to keep up the good work.  No totals for classrooms were given since we didn’t have labels for education totals. 

Mr. Shirvinski asked how the can drive went and everyone involved said it went well.

Linda Hoy discussed the Sheetz coupons fundraiser.  She informed that 336 books were sold with a profit of $1344.  They were ordered and hopefully will be in shortly.  Totals were less than last year. 

Mr. Shirvinski discussed the Turkey Bowl. It runs from 11/2 to 11/16.  He informed that he picks the class at random and they get to move there turkey down the field.  Mr. Shirvinski said that all involved really enjoy this activity. 

Red White and Blue day is set for November 12, 2012.  Report cards are set to go home November 12, as well.  District Preschool Screenings are set for November 11.  This is a service for children ages 3 and 4.  Many local agencies are involved and are very thorough.  CSIU may also offer some services.  This is organized by the Special Education department. If you are still interested in signing your child up please contact Chris in the Special Education Department.  Sue Griscavage and Linda Hoy gave some personal information on the event.

Retake pictures for grades K-4 is set for November 16.  Elementary Memory Book sales end on the 16^th.  Terry reminded everyone to get their orders in.  Sue Griscavage mentioned that the Memory Book is a big deal for those students in 4^th grade due to the fact that their pictures are larger than other years.  Parent Teacher Conferences are sent for November 19 and 20 (No School). And Thanksgiving Recess starts on the 21st until 26^th.  School Board meetings are set for the 12^th and 19^th of November.

Terry asked if everyone would be interested in doing a cookie exchange for the next meeting.  Sherry Humphrey and Karen Cecco both said it was a success last year and thought it was a good idea.  December’s meeting, set for the 5^th at 6:30, if you would like please bring 1-2 dozen cookies with you and the recipe to share. 

Next Mr. Shirvinski made a motion to ask for money to plan an assemble for grades K-4.  The assemble would be from Box of Light.  They do different assemblies per grade but all pertain to curriculum the children are working on. Tia Brown mentioned that they are very neat and Mr. Shirvinski mentioned that they are very creative.   Kindergarten is a reading one.  1^st and 2^nd is a solid liquid and gas.  3^rd is weird, wild storytelling and 4^th is electricity.  The total is $950 and a deposit of $475 is needed and they the balance due in January.  1^st motion Tia Brown and seconded by Karen Cecco.  Motion approved. 

Linda Hoy discussed Script cards and that forms should be going home this week.  She mentioned this is a convenience for parents and that we make a profit from it.  She asked if everyone could please get their orders in on time so that we can get them ordered and return to parents as soon as possible. 

Tia Brown mentions that she reviewed the float fundraiser that was discussed at last meeting.  She suggested that a committee be thought of if we would like to participate in it next year.  That is would be a large undertaking and would need lots of hands. 

Sherry Humphrey discussed the Pennies for playground Committee.  The kick off was November 1^st.  The first “dump” date is set for November 13^th and then every other week.  There is a fundraiser “Cookies with Santa” set for December 1^st from 10-1. $5 per child and adults free.  There will be story time corner, coloring station and an opportunity to take your own picture with Santa.  If you were asked to bring in something for the basket raffle please send in by November 16^th.   The baskets will be out for parent teacher conference and Sherry is looking for people to sign up for sell raffle tickets during this time.  Tickets will be $5 for 20 tickets.  There was a bottle set out book fair and $17.84 was collected.  10 students from Honor Society will be helping with the Story time corner.  Please keep sending in bottle.  Clear, clean bottles will continue to be needed.  Sherry is also looking into Face painting at the mall, a dress down day for high school for a donation.  Rally for recess is still going on and we are #350. 

Sue Griscavage made a motion to help Pennies for our Playground with left over money from the Harvest Festival committee.  She is proposing to pay for the postage for mailings and to pay for the cookies and milk at event up to $867.81.  Diane Mack made a 2^nd motion.  Motion approved. 

The meeting was adjourned at 7:39pm with a motion from Karen Cecco and a second from Suzanne Kuijpers.

Hartman Festival was a huge success as always, it is enjoyed by all.

Please remember to send your Script Card Order Form and money in with your child on time.

A special thank you to all those who donated items, food or their time to our annual Harvest Festival.  It was a great day and the kids are so grateful for all you do to make events like this such a success.

Please make sure you are dressing your child appropriately for the weather as they do go out for recess on cold days and the frigid temperatures are fast approaching!!

Our next HART meeting will be held on December 5^th, 2012 @6:30 in the elementary library.  We will be having a holiday cookie exchange at this meeting so join us for some fun and cookie sampling.  Bring 1-2dozen cookies with you along with copies of your recipe to share with everyone.  It will be a great way to kick off the holiday season and get in the spirit!!  If you do not want to participate in the baking and bringing of cookies, you can still join us for a wonderful time!!!
