The Hartman Helping Hands volunteer appreciation luncheon will be held on May 17 for those who participated. Over 700 hours were logged.

The winning homeroom in the Box Tops/Campbell’s labels contest was Mrs. Gratti with 3,457 labels followed by Mrs. Hower with 1,774 labels, and Miss Varano with 1,732 labels collected.

All Campbell’s labels submitted until May 14 will be doubled.

HART collected $355 and a huge amount of items for the Animal Resource Center from our donuts w/dad event. Thank you to everyone who participated.

The Back to School BBQ will be held on August 19 from 4-6 p.m. Contact Karen Wojtowicz if you are interested in volunteering.

May 2010 Meeting Minutes

Vice-President Karen Wojtowicz brought the meeting to order at 6:40 p.m.

In attendance were: Officers: Vice-President-Karen Wojtowicz, Secretary-Stephanie Mayernick, Treasurer-Regina Longenhagen, Advisor-Mr. Shirvinski, Teacher Rep.-Tia Brown and Parents: Diane Mack, Kim Levan, Linda Hoy, Dawn Knoebel, Sue Kuijpers, Sherry Humphrey, Tammy Hodder, Terry Wommer, Cheryl Roadarmel, and Michelle Conway. President Laurie Morris was absent.

April’s minutes were approved by a motion from Sherry Humphrey and a second from Michelle Conway.

Regina Longenhagen, H.A.R.T.’s treasurer, gave the treasurers report for April. The treasurer’s report was approved by a motion from Dawn Knoebel and a second from Diane Mack.
The class funds are as follows:

Teacher appreciation day is Wednesday, May 5. Food should be dropped off in the office by 10:30 a.m. Clean up will need to be done by 2:00 p.m. Dishes may be picked up in the office.

Muffins with mom will be held on Monday, May 10 from 6-7 p.m. There are 406 responses so far. Mr. Shirvinski will order milk and we will also have water available. Moms and children will be given a clay flower pot to decorate with paint and a pack of flower seeds. 200 pots were purchased for $.69 each. Brushes from the art room will be used. Tammy Hodder volunteered to donate paint.

Mr. Shirvinski received a check for $1,512.44 from Box Tops. He uses some of the money to pay for milk for events, student t-shirts, and PSSA breakfasts. Some playground equipment will need to be replaced in the next few years.

May’s principal newsletter will be sent home to all students. It contains information regarding due dates for school materials to be returned. All lunch accounts need to be paid. Any obligations not paid for will be turned over to the district magistrate. Money left in lunch accounts will be carried over to the next school year.

Beach day will be May 12. Tank tops and flip flops are permitted. No swim suits.

The Hartman Helping Hands volunteer luncheon will be held on May 17 from 12:15-1:30 p.m. Over 700 hours were logged. Certificates will be presented.

The final day for kindergarten registration will be May 19.

Mrs. Brown will be holding an Art Showcase on May 19 from 9-8 p.m. Student art work will be on display.

Movin’ On Up Day for K-3 students will be held on May 27. Parents will receive a letter on May 26 stating next year’s teacher. Students will spend an hour with their new teacher. Parents will have a chance to meet the teacher at the Meet and Greet Night in September.

Relay for Life penny walk will be held on May 22. The grand prize is a two hour party at the Bounceplex.

Thank you letters were presented from the American Red Cross for our donation for Haiti and from the Columbia Montour Home Hospice for our donation to Camp Courage.

No school on May 31 and June 1.

There is a Pre-K Summer Fundamentals program this summer for students entering kindergarten in the fall. It runs from June 28-July 29 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. The K-4 program will not be held this summer.

The district building project is moving forward.

June 2nd is Knoebels Day with no rain date. There is a price increase this year and will cost approximately $300 more than last year. The cafeteria will not be serving lunch at the park this year. Students wishing to each school lunch can pre-order a bagged lunch to eat at the park. We will be at Pavillion F. Information will be sent home on May 5 or 6.

The back to school bbq will be held on August 19 from 4-6 p.m. Mrs. Brown had a suggestion to have a treasure/scavenger hunt. Anyone interested in volunteering for this event should contact Karen Wojtowicz.

Sherry Humphrey presented information about a possible fall fundraiser. Jack Link’s beef sticks cost $.50 and sell for $1, giving a 50% profit. Another idea was a race for education walk to be held in the fall. Students would get pledges/sponsors for walking laps on the track. HART officers will meet in July to organize possible fundraiser details and voting will take place in September.

Kindergarten orientation will be held on August 23 and the first day of school is August 26.

HART officers for next year will be: Karen Wojtowicz-President, Cindy Hricenak-Vice President, Linda Hoy- Treasurer, and Sue Kuijpers-Secretary.

The next HART meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the elementary library.

There was an idea presented that students that don’t participate in a fundraiser should be required to donate a set amount of money such as $5.00 or the donation could be made optional. Another suggestion was to send home a list of scheduled school fundraisers so that parents are aware of when they will be held. The list could be included in the beginning of the year HART informational packet and/or inform new parents at kindergarten orientation.

First and third grade use charter buses for field trips. Fourth grade makes a donation to R.B. Winter State Park.

April is volunteer month. Thank you to all of the HART volunteers.

$4,369.98 was collected for Pennies for Patients. Mrs. Springer’s class collected the most at $421.54 and won a pizza party. Mr. Venna’s class came in second and Mrs. Gratti’s class was third. Thank you to Knoebels for helping to count the money. This is the last year for this. Next year students will participate in the St. Jude’s Math-a-thon.

All Campbell’s labels submitted until May 14 will be doubled.

Wednesday, April 7 is spring picture day. Mr. Shirvinski received letters from two parents that were unhappy with the spring pictures. The school makes money from the pictures purchased that is put into the activities fund. Every student is photographed in the fall. Parents can purchase the spring pictures if they like them or return them to the school.

PSSA testing for grades 3 and 4 in reading and math will be held April 12-16. Fourth grade will have science testing April 28-29. Mr. Shirvinski will provide students with a bag breakfast and a pen. They will have a prep pep rally and an end of testing celebration dance on Friday, April 16.

Parent input letters for next year’s homeroom are due by April 15. No phone calls or emails will be accepted.

April 20 is Superhero Day.

Family/Community Night will be held on Monday, April 26 from 6:30-8 p.m. K-4 science projects will be displayed. Kindergarten’s displays will be in the area by kindergarten and grades 1-4 displays will be in the gym. Classrooms will be closed. The book fair will be open. Any community organization that wishes to set up a table needs to fill out a facilities use form.

Teacher appreciation day is Wednesday, May 5. Requests for food donations will be sent home soon. A suggestion for a teacher gift was to surprise them with muffins and scones for breakfast. The suggestion was made to purchase them from Muffin Man. Tammy Hodder volunteered to call around for prices for them and for muffins with mom.

Tuesday, March 16 is Pre-K night. Mr. Shirvinski will discuss ways to reinforce basic concepts, naming words, sounds, and environmental print. High school students will provide babysitting services. Volunteers are needed to supervise those students from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Contact Laurie Morris if you are interested.

The gym show will be held on March 29 for grades 1 & 4.

The March principal’s newsletter is being sent home with each student. You may submit recommendations for next year’s classroom assignments and are due by April 15. No emails or phone calls will be accepted. Movin On Up Day will be held in May and students will have a chance to meet their new teacher and class.

March 31 and April 1 will be make-up snow days. There will be no school on April 2 and 5. A letter will be sent home regarding changes to the school calendar.

Kindergarten registration will be held March 22-26. Pennies for Patients ended on March 2. Knoebels will be counting the money for the school. Movie night was held on February 19 and raised $481.51 to be donated to the American Red Cross for Haiti.

Read Across America was March 2. Students had a RIF assembly on March 1 which the students enjoyed and received a free RIF book on March 2. The assembly cost $625 for two sessions. Classes are also participating in a door decorating contest for prizes. Students received a cupcake with their lunch on Monday. Mr. Shirvinski is looking for any new ideas for future RIF days. He is looking into the Planetarium for next year.

A reminder that the Act 34 meeting will be held on March 3 at 7 p.m. Please call Tresa Britch if you would like to be put on the agenda to speak. The time limit for speaking is 5 minutes. Mrs. Dawn Knoebel toured the elementary building.

The Title 1 teachers will be hosting a first grade reading program meeting on March 16 at 9 a.m. They will be going over the expectations for first grade reading. Title 1 testing for kindergarten will be held in April. There will be three assessments given-developmental reading assessment, reading comprehension, and writing. Scoring two out of three at basic or below will qualify for Title 1.

Family Fun Night is March 13 from 6-8 p.m. There will be a DJ in the gym and bingo in the large group area. There will be paper and crayons available for children to color. Prepackaged snacks will be available for sale. Any leftover snacks may be sold at Community Night. Optional monetary donations to Camp Courage will be accepted.

Mrs. Rhodes presented HART with thank you cards from her class for the Hartman Harvest Festival and pumpkin contest. They were the first grade pumpkin contest winner.

Donuts with dad will be held on Saturday, April 10 from 10-11 a.m. Home Depot has not returned any of Laurie’s calls. Tom Levan will contact Lowes for craft kits. Family/Community Night will be held on Monday, April 26 from 6:30-8 p.m. Muffins with mom will be held on Monday, May 10 from 6-7 p.m. More details will be discussed at the next HART meeting. Teacher appreciation day will be held on May 5.

Regina Longenhagen asked for volunteers for fundraiser distribution on March 18.

Read Across America day is March 1. There will be an assembly entitled Weird, Wild and Wonderful, about different ways to tell a story. RIF book distribution will be March 2. Mr. Shirvinski is looking for other RIF day ideas besides pajama day.

Pennies for Patients collection has started. This will benefit the Lymphoma Society. Last year we collected over $2,000.

Kindergarten registration will begin on March 22. Parents may call for appts. starting on March 1. Mr. Shirvinski will be sending home a March newsletter containing information about kindergarten registration and homeroom placements for next school year.

A stained glass window was completed in the library in memory of Terry Stellfox who passed away from cancer. He was a third grade teacher.

February 10 – Mismatch Day

During the month of February students in grades 3-6 may buy snacks during lunch if they have money in their account. Snacks must be eaten in the cafeteria. Water is extra. Lunch money rolls over from year to year. The blue slushies are 100% juice. Mr. Shirvinski will mention to his lunch bunch about recycling the water bottles.

Mr. Shirvinski spoke to Jayme Toczylousky about what outside organizations need donations. She mentioned Camp Courage. It is for children who have lost parents and is fully funded by donations. It is held at Camp Victory in Millville.

Movie night is February 19 at 6 p.m. The movie Up will be shown in the gym. Each attendee will receive a bottle of water and popcorn. Optional donations for the Red Cross are being accepted.

January 2010 Meeting Minutes

President Laurie Morris brought the meeting to order at 6:33 p.m.

In attendance were: Officers: President-Laurie Morris, Vice-President-Karen Wojtowicz, Secretary-Stephanie Mayernick, Advisor-Mr. Shirvinski and Parents: Diane Wolfgang, Cheryl Roadarmel, Gloria Seroskie, Diane Mack, Tom Levan, Linda Hoy, Michelle Conway, Andreas Bzdak, Sherry Humphrey, Dawn Knoebel, Sue Kuijpers, and Allison Clark.

Regina Longenhagen, H.A.R.T.’s treasurer, was absent.

December’s minutes were approved by a motion from Sherry Humphrey and a second from Karen Wojtowicz.

Stephanie Mayernick, H.A.R.T.’s secretary, gave the treasurers report for December. The treasurer’s report was approved by a motion from Michelle Conway and a second from Andrea Bzdak. The class funds are as follows:
Kindergarten $100.00 1st grade $1,097.99 2nd grade $503.85
3rd grade $2,765.63 4th grade $614.54

Sue Griscavage will be taking over Box Tops, Renelle Wetzel will be taking over RIF and Stephanie Mayernick will be taking over Campbell’s labels next year.

Movie Night is Friday, February 19 at 6:00 p.m. The tentative movie will be Up. Entry fee will be a NON EXPIRED non-perishable food donation. HART will supply popcorn and bottled water.

Donuts with dad will be held on Saturday, April 10 from 10-11 a.m. Laurie is waiting to hear back from Home Depot if they have enough kits to offer. One kit is being offered per family. Mr. Shirvinski would like to know the cost to purchase more kits so that each student can make something, instead of one kit per family. Are there any other suggestions if Home Depot does not have enough kits available? What will families donate this year at this event? Mr. Shirvinski will ask Jayme Toczylousky, Angel Network co-coordinator, what items are in need. In the past we have donated to the Angel Network and food pantries. Another possible organization is AGAPE. HART will supply donuts, milk and bottled water.

Family Fun Night is Saturday, March 13 from 6-8 p.m. There will be a DJ, bingo, and other activities. HART will also be selling snacks and bottled water.

Pennies for Patients assembly is January 27. This benefits the Lymphoma Society. It will run for 3 weeks and the classroom that collects the most money will receive something. Pennies are preferable but any denomination will be accepted. Checks should be made payable to SCA. All money will be deposited into the school account and one check will be issued to the Lymphoma Society. Knoebels has offered to count and roll the coins.

Family and Community Night will be held on April 26 from 6:30-8. Classrooms will be closed. The book fair will be open and science projects will be displayed. HART will have a table set up for officer voting. Other community organizations will also have information and or registration tables set up.

Open Officer Positions

The positions of President, Treasurer and Secretary will be open at the end of the school year. President and Secretary are two year positions. Regina Longenhagen, current treasurer, will be stepping down at the end of this year so the position will only be one year. Elections will take place in the spring. November’s minutes were approved by a motion from Kim Levan and second by Diane Mack.

The speaker for the night was principal, Joe Shirvinski. He spoke about the school’s new spelling and phonics program.

The Book Fair made $6234.72 by taking all of our profit as Scholastic dollars plus another $1396.94 in sales volume bonus. Of the profit $4120.27 was used by offering the 25% discount and $180.86 was used by the library. The remaining balance of $3330.00 will be used to buy items for the school from the Scholastic catalog. The fall book fair supplies the library and guided reading room with books and the spring book fair supplies books to classroom libraries.

A parent warned of a Judy Bloom book that is not appropriate for elementary reading. Judy Bloom is a famous children’s book author.

The winter RIF Day is December 11 from 8 am – 2 pm. The spring RIF Day will have an assembly entitled Weird, Wild and Wonderful by the Box of Light Theatre about storytelling. The cost of the assembly is $650/day and will be for two assemblies. A check for 50% deposit was signed.

Pajama day is December 10. Parents signed up to be helpers. The schedule is 8:30-9 second grade, 9-9:30 first grade, 9:30-10 fourth grade, 10-10:30 kindergarten, and 10:30-11 third grade. High school students will be guest readers and all students will be treated to milk and cookies.

Mr. Shirvinski handed out flyers to anyone interested in a program sponsored by Geisinger regarding childhood obesity. Extra ROAR t-shirts are being sold for $7.00 each. Water is being sold in the cafeteria for an extra $.50. It does not take the place of milk. Mrs. Holleran will be presenting two new food samples at the next lunch bunch meeting.

Dana Lucas will be the guest speaker at the Jan 5, 2010 HART meeting. She will speak about grants.
HART donated four t-shirts to the Angel Network. Movie night is scheduled for Feb 19, 2010 from 7-9 p.m. We will be showing Up. Popcorn and water will be available. Admission to the movie will be a non-expired canned good.

We would like to thank everyone for making the Hartman Harvest Festival another great success. Approximately 200 lbs. of food was donated to the Elysburg and Catawissa food banks. The winning homerooms for the pumpkin decorating contest are:

The speaker for the night was school nurse, Jean Atherton. She spoke about the H1N1 virus.

Karen Wojtowicz thanked all volunteers who helped at this years Hartman Harvest Festival. Next year Mr. Shirvinski may use the school reach phone system to remind parents to send in canned goods for the harvest donation and to remind students of proper dress for outside activities. Approximately 200 lbs. of food was donated.

There was a change in the homeroom parent for Mrs. Rhodes’s homeroom. It was changed to Kim Levan.

Mr. Shirvinski will be paying for the refreshments for Grandparents Day. He also passed out coupons from Giant for their Giant A+ rewards program. The coupon is worth 10 extra points if you spend $15 or more. They are also sponsoring a Principal’s Challenge cook off. The deadline is November 7 and the winning school will receive 500 points. HART is also covered by the school district’s liability insurance for any school events it sponsors.

Reminder that Tiger Talk is going paperless. Parents may send in a note if they don’t have internet access. It should be online by the 2nd week of the month. A school reach message may also be done to remind parents that the newsletter is now paperless.

The Turkey Bowl runs November 5-20. Each day Mr. Shirvinski draws a homeroom and that turkey moves across the football field. The winning homeroom gets an extra recess in the spring.

Pajama Day will be held on Dec 10 in conjunction with RIF. Each student will receive a free book. High school students will read to the elementary students. Students will also receive cookies and milk. Volunteers will be needed to serve refreshments. RIF will also be held again in March. March 1 & 2 is Read Across America Day.

Career Day was held on October 16. Mr. Shirvinski and Ms. Bieber are very happy with the turnout. The elementary school had the most speakers. Next year they are considering a career fair style for third and fourth grade where the students can visit different tables for each career.

The next HART meeting is December 1 and will be held in the large group area. Mr. Shirvinski will be speaking about the new phonics and spelling program.

The ROAR t-shirts have been distributed. Some students have not received one yet. There was in mix-up between the youth small and the adult small. There will be a school wide day for students to wear their t-shirts. A suggestion was made to have a sample of each size available prior to ordering. Mr. Shirvinski hopes to distribute t-shirts to incoming kindergarten classes in the future.

School pictures should be in shortly. They usually take about a month to come in.

This is the first year the yearbooks will be done in color. Please order now if you want a copy. There are very few extras ordered.

School will be in session on November 11. A message will also be sent via the school reach phone system.
