H.A.R.T. MINUTES-MAY 2012

The meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m.on May 2,2012 by President Karen Wojtowicz.

In attendance were: Officers: President Karen Wojtowicz, Vice President Sue Griscavage, Treasurer Linda Hoy, Secretary Suzanne Kuijpers and Advisor Mr. Shirvinski. Parents: Danee Ryter-McCoog, Stacey Fenstermacher, Karen Cecco, Dawna Knoebel, Kristene Baldwin, Terry Genners, Sherry Humphrey, Richard Miller, Dawn Knoebel and Michelle Conway.

Sue Griscavage gave the Vice President's Report. She noted that Teacher Appreciation Week was going well and seems to be greatly enjoyed by all the teachers. Sue said that some gifts were raffled off for the teachers. The raffle prizes were Sheetz coupons, Massages and flowers. The budgeted amount for teacher appreciation was $1000.00 but only $496.66 was spent due to donations from individuals and businesses.
Sue also spoke about the Hartman Helper Luncheon which is May 14th at 12:00 in the large group area.
Sue presented gifts to the outgoing HART officers on behalf of HART and the parents. Gifts were given to President Karen Wojtowicz and Secretary Suzanne Kuijpers as a thank you for their service.

Linda Hoy gave the Treasurer's Report. The general fund balance stands at $21,132.80. The class funds are as follows:
Kindergarten: $0
1st Grade: $0
2nd Grade: $2,318.09
3rd Grade: $988.53
4th Grade: $1,616.69
Linda noted that Kindergarten and 1st Grade are in the negative due to payments for their field trips. These amounts do not reflect money raised at the Hartman Hustle which will give them a balance.
Linda explained that the total raised at The Hartman Hustle is $11,204.36, however, deductions will come out of this amount. Sue Griscavage commented that the event was very well organized and seemed like a great success. Linda said that the top 3 classes for The Hustle are as follows: Mrs. Spotts class who won a snow cone party, Mrs. Gratti's class who won a kickball with Mr. Shirvinski game, and Mrs. Sharrow's class who won a pizza party. On May 17th the Limo To Lunch With Mr. Shirvinski will take place for the top students in each grade.
Linda thanked all those who volunteered their time at The Hartman Hustle. Mr. Shirvinski thanked Linda for organizing the event as well. Linda also gave thanks to those who donated items used as prizes: Knoebel's who donated tickets, Michelle Conway who donated frisbees, etc., and Terry Genners who donated "Thirty One" bags.
There was a motion to approve the Treasurer's report by Terry Genners and a second from Dawn Knoebel. The Treasurer's Report was then approved.

Suzanne Kuijpers gave the Secretary's Report which consisted of only a review of the April Minutes. The April Minutes were approved with a motion from Rich Miller and a second from Michelle Conway.

Mr. Shirvinski gave the Principal's Report. A check in the amount of $1914.94 was received from Box Tops. Mr. Shirvinski talked about the AR Reward in which he will be made into a human sundae. This event will take place on May 9th at 10:20 a.m.. Mr Shirvinski told everyone that HART will be getting a new area where Title 1 Reading used to be. He also told those present that Movin' On Up Day will take place on May 24th with letters going home with students on May23rd. There was also discussion about the 4th Grade tee shirts and how they will be paid for.
Mr. Shirvinski talked about 2 summer programs for students. "Ready, Set, Grow" is for students who will be entering Kindergarten in the Fall. This program has been in place since 2005 and is very beneficial to students who need a little extra help and encouragement. There is no bus transportation so parents need to provide transportation for their children. There is a maximum of 25 students and there is currently a waiting list. The other program is a Reading Program done in conjunction with Bloomsburg University and is for students in K-4 with reading difficulties.
Mr. Shirvinski also talked about the Knoebel's Day which will be held on May 30th. There will be no rain date , however, it was determined that HART will provide a $10.00 book of tickets to students if the weather is too bad for the school to be able to go on the trip. Mr. Shirvinski noted that if students owe $ for lost books or owe $ for unpaid lunches, they will not be able to attend the Knoebel's trip. Parents will be notified in the event that any money is past due.
Mr. Shirvinski informed those present that a school nurse must accompany field trips. This is a state policy and so the nurse must be a school nurse and not just someone from outside the school.
He said that the school's spelling bee was a huge success and will probably take place again next year.

There was some discussion at this point of the meeting about The Fit For Funds Fundraiser. There was a vote to see if we should do it again next year. This vote was approved with a motion from Kristene Baldwin and a second from Karen Cecco. Richard Miller suggested doing a 15/5 split of the fee that needs to be paid to Tara from Fit For Funds and also suggested a 70/30 split for general funds and class funds. His motion was declined due to no other votes for his suggestions. It was decided through a motion by Michelle Conway and a second from Sue Griscavage, to give Tara her fee 10% this year and 10% next year. The class funds will receive 75% and the general funds will receive 25%--this was voted on with a motion from Rich Miller and a second from Kristene Baldwin.
The following are Box Top only totals for top classrooms:
Mrs. Spotts-2526
Mrs. Rhodes-2001
Mrs. Pfirman-1888
Mrs. Gratti-1819
There was discussion about looking for area businesses who would allow us to place drop off boxes for box tops and labels in their establishments.
Karen introduced the 2 new HART officers to everyone at the meeting. Our new HART President for next school year will be Terry Genners and our new HART Secretary will be Kristene Baldwin.

Our Spring Book Fair amount was $ 10,937.55. Mr. Shirvinski announced that there will be only one book fair per school year as of Fall 2012.Thank you to all those who volunteered at Book Fair and to Danee for organizing it!
Mr. Shirvinski made a motion to pay 50% of the 4th Grade tee shirts and the other 50% will be from their class funds. This was approved with a second from Linda Hoy.
The Back To School BBQ was another topic of discussion at the meeting. The possibility of changing the time was debated because it has interfered with sports practices and sometimes with people's work schedules. There was a motion by Karen Wojtowicz to not have The Back To School BBQ prior to the start of school which received a second from Karen Cecco. The discussion of whether or not to have the event after the start of school will take place at the summer officer's meeting.

Karen Wojtowicz mentioned that Mrs. Brown needs help setting up for the Art Show. The Art Show will be held on May16th from 6:00-8:00 p.m.. Contact Mrs. Brown if you are able to help.
There was also some discussion of how new people could be encouraged to attend monthly HART meetings.

A question was asked if another RN could step in if the school nurse is not available and Mr. Shirvinski will be checking on this detail.

Mr. Shirvinski gave a presentation on how to navigate the new Southern Columbia website. He explained that there will not be a school calendar mailed out this year due to budget cuts. You can now access a detailed calendar on the website. He said that you can click " view all " when you see calendar events and you will be able to see calendar pages by the month. You can see events from the elementary, middle and high school on the website. Elementary parents can also view the HART pages for minutes from the meetings and newsletters on the site as well. On the menus that are sent home with the children, you can find upcoming events also. The website is www.scasd.us

The HART officers introduced themselves as did the parents in attendance of the meeting.

Sue Griscavage gave the Vice President's Report. She asked that those who are interested in becoming a Hartman Helper Volunteer or a homeroom parent, please send in their paperwork ASAP. You can also get in contact with Sue if you have questions. Sue also reminded the group that there is an orientation for first time Hartman Helpers on September 19th from 6:00-7:00 in the Large Group Area. Mr. Shirvinski added that you need to volunteer at least one hour per school year in some capacity to keep your clearances up to date.

Linda Hoy gave the Treasurer's Report. The report was approved with a motion from Richard Miller and a second from Michelle Conway.
The class funds are as follows:
Kindergarten:$100.00
1st Grade: $2,234.58
2nd Grade: $2,318.09
3rd Grade: $3,671.67
4th Grade: $1,766.69
The General Fund Balance is $12,435.61

Linda explained that we were not prepared to vote on the budget for this school year yet because of possible changes in fundraisers. There was discussion on the possibility of doing Race For Education in the Spring rather than a Fall Fundraiser. There were two people opposed to not doing the Fall Fundraiser. It was decided that a committee should be formed to further this discussion and explore other fundraiser opportunities. There was a sign up sheet available after the meeting to join the fundraiser committee.

Suzanne Kuijpers gave the Secretary's Report. The report consisted of a review of minutes from the May meeting. There was a motion to approve the Secretary's Report by Sherry Humphrey and a second from Georgiann Noll.

Mr. Shirvinski gave the Principal's Report. He gave a huge thank you to HART for all the fundraising and volunteers for various events as it was a great school year last year. He also commented that the Back To School BBQ was a fun event as well. He reminded those present that it will be Grandparent's Day at G.C. Hartman on September 20 and 21. He asked for volunteers to greet the grandparents, etc. and sign ups were available after the meeting. Mr. Shirvinski explained that there will be school spirit days and a paper was sent home with the students telling you about them.
He reported that there is an elementary activity fund that is made up of checks from Box Tops, Labels For Education, Giant A Plus Rewards, etc.. This money is used solely for the students in the way of treats during PSSA testing, ROAR tee shirts, etc. Mr. Shirvinski said that he received a check for $1,180.78 form Box Tops and a check for $83.00 from Target Red Card. Campbell's Soup labels are redeemed for school equipment.
Mr. Shirvinski added that ROAR tee shirts are available for $7.00 if your child has outgrown their shirt. Mr. Shirvinski provides a ROAR shirt for students in Kindergarten.
Sue Griscavage reminded the parents that you must sign up every year for Giant A Plus Rewards and that forms will be going home with the students in the next week. She asked that when you send in the Box Tops and soup labels, to separate them in bags marked with the child's homeroom teacher.
Mr. Shirvinski will let everyone know when we will be making up the flood days as soon as he hears from the board. He reminded everyone of Meet and Greet Night which is on the 15th and he said that the students do not need to be present as it is mainly for the parents. It was also discussed that RIF will continue despite the government discontinuing the program. It will be funded through HART but only held one time per year.

Karen discussed Old Business. She asked for feedback on the time change of the BBQ but there were no comments. She discussed that the Kindergarten Orientation went well and is a good way to ease anxiety on the part of the parents and meet the teachers.

Karen spoke of new business which focused on committee chair persons. She said sign up sheets would be available after the meeting for Harvest Festival- we are looking for someone to co-chair the event with Sue Griscavage. This is an all day fun event for students in K-4 but you must sign up to volunteer for that day. The festival will be held on October 28th.
Fire Safety Day will be held on October 5th : this event is for grades K, 1 and 3. Volunteers needed to set up lunch, etc. for the firemen.
October 11th will be Fall Picture Day. Order forms for yearbooks will be going home with the kids soon.

Laurie Morris from the SMART organization asked for a volunteer to take over the position of Secretary. Anyone who has children in middle school and is interested in the position, should contact Laurie or any of the HART officers. The SMART meetings are held on the first Monday of every month.

Karen thanked everyone for coming to our first HART meeting of this school year. She reminded everyone that the meetings will be on the first Wednesday of each month, except for April which will be on the first Tuesday.
